Preliminary Research on my Thesis Project
What is thesis you may ask?
Who knows...
Basically its when us Digital Design students propose a problem they want to solve using design.
I am a video person. I like editing and creating cool graphics, and making everything come together into an exciting and engaging video.
What kind of problem does that solve?
I was originally wanting to make a title sequence or some sort of branding package or promo material for a tv network/show. But again... is that really a problem? If it's what I want to go into later in life, is it so wrong to want to make something like that? Probably not. There is a problem if I have a solution before a problem. So I ended up writing down all the problems that I have (be prepared to get to know me a little bit):
so that was a brain storm session of the top things that came to mind when I thought of problems that occur in my life. This is very few I feel like but it's at least a start.
My top issues that i chose from these that I feel I could work on would be helping people become more aware about endometriosis and in essence helping the cause in general; figuring out how to make the DMV and emissions testing experiences more fun; and creating a video to bring awareness to my boss' company.
Now for the research! I dove to the internet to see what problems there were with endometriosis. I found that 1 in 10 women, by the age of their reproduction years, has endometriosis. That is a lot of women! Another thing about endometriosis? Over the last 8 years, research money put towards endometriosis has dropped $9 million. That is insane and also not fair. Once I found information like this and many others, I decided that this could be something I could be a part of and impact positively.
I wanted to see if any PSA videos were around.. and there are.
I found a really nice PSA from Endometriosis.org that basically explains everything about the disease. Thing is, it's from 7 years ago. I did find a lot of great information about the disease on this site, but of course I couldn't just stay there. I also wanted to know if many women knew about the disease or even if they have it. Eventually I found SpeakEndo, which is an organization that helps bring awareness to the disease, brings women together in a close community who feel open to talking about it, and gets people involved with activism to help change policies regarding treatment of endometriosis.
Once I started there, I just looked at more articles and websites about the disease and what is being done about it:

This was just a start on where my research could go, but in summary, Endometriosis is a very common disease among women; most don't even know they have it until decades later. Not much is being done in terms of research funding or treatment. Women are also experiencing painful and unnecessary treatments that end up ruining their lives.
So, what do I want to do about it? I want to encourage people to help fund research for endometriosis, and decrease the normalization about the disease.

- it sucks to have and there hasn't been anything done to cure it
- Not feeling heard, not asking questions, being too shy
- Not asking for help
- Budgeting money

- Opening up to people; telling them how I feel, without feeling shameful
- Joanns not having enough employees (especially during busiest days of week)
- How to bring in more employees
- Sherri (from VIP Exhibits) wants a video, what problem would that solve?
- How can we make people more aware and
- Our school system in the united states
- How can we make kids more engaged in school (any and all school)
- How can we make kids more interested in learning about history
- Why are they filtering history anyways!?!
- How do we encourage both girls and boys to be confident
- DMV is really boring
- how can it be more enjoyable? Or easier? Do we create a system that’s easier and faster for the employees or the people registering their car?
- How can getting emissions done be more enjoyable? Also really boring and drab; would people watch a video? A fun mural? Physical?
