My New Mission and Brand Statements

Yesterday and today I really sat down to try and figure out what my mission statement and brand statement to say. I looked back at my notes for my previous statement, which was this: With a bubbly personality, and a twisted perspective on the otherwise ordinary, I create videos that encourage people to step outside of their comfort zones to take action and achieve the extraordinary. This was a bit long and a little vague, according to Brian and a few of my peers. Though it distinguishes myself from others, as some peers say, it isn't quite fully there. I realized that my mission statement was closer to a brand statement.  So in order to figure out what these statements are, I wrote down what my goals, expectations and motivations are. From this I found words such as inspire, creativity, change, curiosity, and action. I believe that a video should make you do something. If you see a movie trailer or tv show commercial, you should feel encouraged and excited to go see tha...

Research Summary and Pitch Deck Outline

So life has been crazy and I haven't made much of a jump on my research as of yet. I did meet with Michelle Carpenter to get some help on my project on Monday and she was very very helpful. I got some ideas of where I can research different articles, for example GoldenTrailer.com   Cinelynx.com  and MovieMaker.com . Michelle also gave me a bunch of names to contact as my SMEs and DMEs , including but not limited to Ryan Mast, Katie Marquette, and Eric Jewett. This week I will be contacting them to meet me, and have some questions answered about the movie trailer making process as well as the motion graphics and editing techniques behind it. Now for the research I have done thus far. So far I have looked at Stephen King trailers, every single one from Carrie, to Pet Sematary coming out in 2019. I noticed that there was a deep voiced movie narrator for about half of the movie trailers, for example Carrie , The Running Man , and Thinner . However there are other movie trail...

The Research Question and future SMEs and DMEs

So I am struggling a little bit with this one because I had to restart my research for this thesis project. I also may be over thinking this as well. I decided that instead of working on solving the lack of research money towards endometriosis, I'm going to research the history and evolution of movie trailers and apply those findings to Stephen King movies and then develop a solution to promoting Stephen King movies to a younger generation. According to one poll from 3 years ago on the Stephen King forum , a third of his readers are middle aged adults. That is just for his readers though. The question now is whether that applies to the movies and if middle aged adults are more likely to go see his movies compared to teenagers and young adults. Does this mean that his target audience is for middle aged adults? Has this changed from when he first started writing/making movies in the 70s? In a blog post about his take on marketing (for books), Stephen King says to visualize your...

BRAINBLAST!!!!

I had a whirlwind of a revelation this morning. I think I figured out a really cool thesis project that I could totally get behind.... Once I figure out what it is exactly. I love movies. Don't we all? We have all fallen in love with a movie at some point in our lives. Right? What I love most about movies (sometimes besides the movie itself) is the trailer or title sequence.  The whole point of today's movie trailers is to provide information to the viewer about an upcoming movie that will be shown in theaters. These days, there is so much hype over the premiere of a movie that some may even release 2 to 4 full length movie trailers the year before a movie is even released . I also have noticed this, that I will see promotions for the same movie everywhere, whether that be tv, a theater, or social media like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. I think this is a smart move on the studio's part because it literally gives exposure and hype to the movie so that people are mo...

Defining the Problem

Okay. This has been a tricky one. I found a problem, but not sure how to put it into a design problem. Basically, I searched all over the Googles and found a lot about Endometriosis. It's very common in women (about as common as asthma and diabete s). Even though it is so common, not a lot of women know about it, and it ends up becoming brushed off as an over exaggeration of symptoms. That's not very cool. I also found that over the last 8 years or so, research funding for endometriosis has dropped about $9 million .  According to their website , NIH spends more on lead poisoning research than on endometriosis! I don't understand that. So I am here to find out how to increase funding for endometriosis research. But first, defining the problem. First, the constraints: I'm not sure if this is for the problem itself, or the whole design project, but it comes down to only having 5 months to solve this problem, finding a way to make the disease worth researching, and ...

Preliminary Research on my Thesis Project

Image
What is thesis you may ask? Who knows... Basically its when us Digital Design students propose a problem they want to solve using design. I am a video person. I like editing and creating cool graphics, and making everything come together into an exciting and engaging video. What kind of problem does that solve? I was originally wanting to make a title sequence or some sort of branding package or promo material for a tv network/show. But again... is that really a problem? If it's what I want to go into later in life, is it so wrong to want to make something like that? Probably not. There is a problem if I have a solution before a problem. So I ended up writing down all the problems that I have (be prepared to get to know me a little bit): What problems do I have? Endometriosis Kind of talking about it… seems taboo it sucks to have and there hasn't been anything done to cure it Not feeling heard, not asking questions, being too shy Not asking for help...

I HAVE A LOGO!!

Image
So this has been a bit of a struggle because I am not the best with logos. I started out sketching and looking up ideas on Pinterest and Google, trying to find something that was relevant to my Twisted Seashell brand. I looked up seashells I could do as well as logos that had a seashell incorporated in it. Closest thing I found that I liked was a graphic about summer: I then made my own version with tracing paper for my brand and thought it looked pretty cool: I then attempted to vectorize my drawing in Illustrator. I became frustrated and looked to tutorials. I found what I should do in order to get my letters to fit in that shape... but it just didn't look right. SO I ended scrapping the idea when talking with my group. This logo would have been too hard to read and confusing. So... I went back to the drawing board as they say. I created a lot more iterations of different options for my logo. Here is how that turned out: I really liked the s wrapping around the T....
