Research Summary and Pitch Deck Outline
So life has been crazy and I haven't made much of a jump on my research as of yet.
I did meet with Michelle Carpenter to get some help on my project on Monday and she was very very helpful. I got some ideas of where I can research different articles, for example GoldenTrailer.com Cinelynx.com and MovieMaker.com.
Michelle also gave me a bunch of names to contact as my SMEs and DMEs , including but not limited to Ryan Mast, Katie Marquette, and Eric Jewett. This week I will be contacting them to meet me, and have some questions answered about the movie trailer making process as well as the motion graphics and editing techniques behind it.
Now for the research I have done thus far. So far I have looked at Stephen King trailers, every single one from Carrie, to Pet Sematary coming out in 2019. I noticed that there was a deep voiced movie narrator for about half of the movie trailers, for example Carrie, The Running Man, and Thinner. However there are other movie trailers, such as Misery, the 1990 It, as well as the 2017 It, all use a narrator to describe the movie, however it is characters in the actual movie verses a faceless narrator.
Stephen King also has a relatively broad range in movies. They are not all horror and thriller, but there are a few that are coming of age stories as well as international dramas such as Stand By Me and No Smoking. I found this to be interesting in how these movie trailers were cut for their particular audiences and the feeling that was projected for these movies. The drama movie felt very dramatic with the popular song in the background as well as the tall dark and handsome main character of the film. Also, the fact that it is in another language is interesting because it is clearly for a difference audience, so the trailer has to be cut in a way that appeals to a different audience then an English speaking American. The Stand By Me trailer also uses a narrator that is a character in the movie, and it also uses a popular song, Stand By Me, in the background. The fact that the song and movie title are the same makes it easier for people to remember what the movie is so that it is more likely for them to see that movie since the song will be stuck in their head, and then they will want to see what the movie is about.

Pitch Deck Outline:
Topic: How does
narrative of a movie trailer influence the perception of the movie?
Main Categories:
- History of movie trailers to today
- Key figures in movie trailers
- Impactful movie trailers that have influenced the direction of movie trailers
- Topic of how I may address the issue of making one movie appeal to all audiences with different movie trailers
I. Research Question:
- How does the narrative of movie trailers influence our perception of movies?
II. Investigation:
- This is what I will be researching for the next few months as well as what may come of it:
- Background:
- Here is the history of movie trailers; I will start with the first movie trailer, then look at each decade following and see what trends have come for each genre; I will look to today's trailers, and analyze what makes a good movie trailer; I will look into the process of how movie trailers are made, who makes the final decisions and what those decisions entail; I will look at how they have evolved and what changed and why and by whom
- I will then look into the techniques of narrative and its history and evolution in movie trailers; this will tell me how these techniques may or may not influence someone to go see a movie
- I will research what motivates people to go see something, and use that to further support why some movie trailers are successful and some are not, as well as support my later decisions in making my own trailers; this will be a little more scientific using the lens of psychology to help determine this
- I will look into the history of storytelling and technology and how that has influenced the look, feel and techniques of making a movie trailer (after effects vs the warner 3d and the tingler)
- Case Studies:
- I will then select the top movie trailer of each genre and see why it is successful, (in its category) as well as describe the differences in techniques between genres and what ways that trailers need to be edited for each type of genre
- I will also select 5 big movie trailer editors and analyze their different styles and how that has influenced the final movie trailer; I will also investigate how their styles have influenced movie trailers today; this will also state who changed the game in movie trailers
- The project:
- This is my proposed project:
- I will hope to gather enough evidence and knowledge to find a movie and using different editing techniques to create different movie trailers for specific audiences.
Goals: I hope to
understand the techniques in creating a successful and motivating movie
trailer. I want to better my skills in editing and videography to capture
elements of a strong storyline. I also want to better my skills in narrative
and writing so that I can better tell a story through motion graphics and
editing. Finally I hope to fully
understand how to tell the same story but in different ways for different
audience.
