My New Mission and Brand Statements
Yesterday and today I really sat down to try and figure out what my mission statement and brand statement to say. I looked back at my notes for my previous statement, which was this:
With a bubbly personality, and a twisted perspective on the otherwise ordinary, I create videos that encourage people to step outside of their comfort zones to take action and achieve the extraordinary.
This was a bit long and a little vague, according to Brian and a few of my peers. Though it distinguishes myself from others, as some peers say, it isn't quite fully there. I realized that my mission statement was closer to a brand statement.
So in order to figure out what these statements are, I wrote down what my goals, expectations and motivations are. From this I found words such as inspire, creativity, change, curiosity, and action. I believe that a video should make you do something. If you see a movie trailer or tv show commercial, you should feel encouraged and excited to go see that movie or tv show. You should feel enticed to find out what happens in that movie or how the rest of that tv show will go. Commercials in general should cause people to feel a certain way about a brand or product. They should go to Golden Corral for their fried chicken and chocolate fountain. They should use credit karma to help with their credit score and improve their way of life. That is what a commercial is for and that is what I expect a video to do: "encourage somebody to greater effort" or " to awaken a particular feeling in somebody".
Another reason why inspire came up so much in my analysis, is because this word has come up so much in my life that I feel it is my "calling". Since the second grade, my teacher gave us all a rock that had a certain word on it. Mine happened to say the word "inspire". I never really knew what that meant when I got it, but from that day on, that rock has been with me and has been a reminder of what my purpose it. I don't quite know how I will inspire people, but I hope that with my video work, that I will inspire people to do or feel something.
When looking at my goals and expectations, I focused what I want to actually inspire. That is where the three c's came in. I thought these words best described what I wanted to get out of people when they saw my work. I want to invoked curiosity, so people wonder what something is about, and how they can learn more. I also want to encourage change. I want people to change their behavior so that they physically do something. That they go and see a movie, they share a movie trailer, they purchase a product, they join a movement. Finally, I want to inspire creativity. I want people to use their minds and experiences to make this world better for everyone, one person at a time.
After all that, I think I came up with a brand and mission statement that fits who I am and what I want to do:
Brand Statement:
Delivering extraordinary videos that inspire curiosity, creativity, and change in ordinary people.
Mission Statement:
Using
my skills in videography and motion graphics, I want to inspire people to
achieve greatness within themselves.
