What IS my niche?
That is a solid question that I had to do a lot of digging in order to have an inkling of an idea.
At the moment, I still don't know, but that's okay. There's time!
What I do know, is that I love editing videos. I have so much joy piecing together a story that gets people excited for events or a movie. I also love to create awareness for troubling subjects, such as mental illness or issues that have long needed to be solved, like hunger or homelessness.
I want to use this knack for video that I have in order to help bring people together, learn about what is going on in our world, no matter how big or small, and inspire them to take action.
...or just make really cool title sequences or movie trailers.
Anyways, I noticed that a lot of my work has a darker tone to it. I like the weird, unusual and suspenseful. I love looking at the details in things in order to know the whole picture. I also dig deeper into the meaning of things, looking for multiple perspectives of the same object or symbol and how that influences people's behavior and thought processes.
As for the customers I would most appeal to.... this I felt to be a little more challenging, but I did find some tv stations/channels that I felt I could contribute to based off of the style and content that we share.

Showtime:
This tv channel includes a lot of content that I personally enjoy watching as well as hope to maybe contribute to someday. I think it would be awesome to create title sequences for content that is produced here. Also their style in their editing sort of reflects what I am doing in my own work.
Tiny Hero:
This studio develops the movie trailers for all the big popular movies such as Marvel, Star Wars and Disney/Pixar. This is the dream. I love these movies and I think this would be the coolest place to work at. Unfortunately it's in California... that's why this is a future dream because I'd have to really love my job in order to move to California.
Elastic:
This is another studio that makes title sequences and other content for sports. Their darker tones and content also reflect what I have been making and they honestly just seem really cool and fun to work with.
I won't go into more details with these links because it's similar descriptions as the ones above, but I figured I'd have a nice place to hold all the studios/ tv channels I'd like to work for:
Now for the frustrations my services can address...
I also found this hard to answer, because I had to start with learning what problems does motion or videos answer. I noticed that video marketing and motion graphics help bring awareness to certain issues, such as PSA's or commercials for products/services. They also communicate ideas and stories, whether it is simple, complex or unusual. So for my services, I would be able to address a lack of awareness for certain issues that are harmful to communities. I could set up stories for movies that inform people what the movie is about, and encourage them to want to go see it.
Finally,
I also struggled with finding who my competition is. When I looked up Professional Video Editor on Google, the top results were for computer software! I found this surprising but also informative. It made me think what do video editors call themselves in order to get people to view their webpage without being linked to software. I also thought that maybe all those self taught video editors could be potential competition, they would just be the lower end of the video editors that are out there. To me, they are the ones editing videos for YouTube channels, whereas I want to be and do so much more. This means I would be in competition with all of the production studios and artists who freelance their work, such as Nadia Tzuo and Barbara Laszewski Garner. These are award winning women artists who I certainly aspire to be, but also would be in competition with. They are motion graphic artists who work with movie title sequences such as Rogue One, The Importance of Being Ernest movies, and Star Trek.
That's it for today! Tune in for more updates!
